Bega is a town in the south-east of New South Wales, Australia in the Bega Valley Shire, it is the home of Local Government, Health, Education, Finance and Shopping in the region, it is also home and origin of Bega Cheese, the region’s largest employer.
Set in a valley at the junction of the Bega and Brogo rivers and surrounded by rich dairy country, Bega is a handsome, historic town that is the rural centre of the Sapphire Coast and gateway to the lush Bega Valley.
The traditional inhabitants the Djiringanj, Thaua, Bidawahal and Ngarigo tribal groups comprised the Yuin–Monaro nation in the area now known as the Bega Valley.
Bega is a relaxed rural community that offers a tranquil lifestyle with an old fashioned country charm where the people are real. An ideal and safe community to raise a family, Bega has rolling green pastures, stunning National Parks and is a ten minute drive from the sapphire waters of the Far South Coast, it is sister city to Littleton, Colorado in the United States.

Bega’s newest retail development Bega Village incorporates 2 major retailers and space for 40 specialty tenancies. Bega is the base for many major retailers and a vast range of diverse specialty shops which attract shoppers from all over the Bega Valley and beyond.
With a designated industrial area and central location, Bega is the home of industry in our region. From Bega Cheese as the biggest employer to smaller construction teams, industry is an important sector which contributes to employment and economic development in our region.
Bega is the home of the South East Regional Hospital (SERH) as well as many of the regions health providers and allied health services. SERH is a modern hospital providing state-of-the-art health facilities for communities in our region. The Hospital provides 134 inpatient beds, an emergency department, and acute medical, surgical, maternity and paediatrics services. There is affordable onsite motel style accommodation available in the Carers Accommodation for families, relatives and carers of patients.
Agricultural production is a particularly important contributor to Bega’s economy, and is a key industry in our region. In 2015/16, the total value of agricultural output in Bega Valley Shire was $96m. The largest commodity produced was Milk, which accounted for 65.3%. The Bega Valley has a proud farming heritage and many agricultural supply and service businesses, and organisations are located in Bega.
Bega is the home of the Bega Valley Regional Gallery and smaller galleries which support an eclectic and vibrant arts and craft community. One of Australia’s most loved and richest portrait awards, the biennial Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award celebrates realistic portraiture in memory of Bega Valley’s most staunch supporter and generous patron of the arts.
Offices and staff form all levels of Government are based in Bega providing essential services and access to serving members. The Bega Valley Shire council has its main office and chambers located in the centre of Bega.

With University campuses, TAFE centres and numerous public and private schools, Bega provides the biggest range of education and learning facilities in the Bega Valley.
